Pre-Surgery Preparations: Essential Steps for a Smooth Procedure
When preparing for a surgical procedure, your actions leading up to the big day play a critical role in ensuring a successful outcome and smooth recovery. Although the specific preparations might vary depending on the type of surgery and individual health considerations, there are universal steps and precautions that everyone should follow. Here’s a quick guide to help you get ready:
Fasting Requirements
One of the most important pre-surgery guidelines is fasting. You will need to abstain from all food, drinks, gum, candy, and even water for at least 6 hours before your surgery. This is crucial as consuming anything can increase the risk of complications such as aspiration during anesthesia.
Medical adjustment
Prior to your surgery, it’s essential to review and adjust your medication regimen. However, please remember that your overall well-being is always a priority. Consult with your doctor before stopping or adjusting any medications!
Blood Thinners, Aspirin, and Anti-Inflammatory Drugs: Discontinue these medications at least 3 days before your surgery, as they can increase bleeding risks during and after the procedure. Be sure to consult your doctor first.
Hormonal Pills: Stop taking hormonal pills on the day of your surgery, as they can affect clotting.
Blood Pressure Medications: Continue taking your blood pressure medication as usual unless directed otherwise by your physician.
Always inform your surgical team about all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. If you have high blood pressure, notify them at least a week before the surgery to ensure proper management.
Pre-Surgery Preparations
To prepare for your surgery, consider the following steps:
Remove Accessories: Take off all accessories such as earrings, piercings, nail polish, gel nails, and eyelash or hair extensions.
Report Health Changes: Notify your medical team if you have been experiencing COVID-like symptoms, such as coughing, fever, sore throat, or headaches, within the past 1-2 weeks.
Shower: Take a thorough shower on the morning of your surgery as after the surgery, you might have a hard time doing so.
Menstrual Precautions: If you are on your period, use pads instead of tampons to prevent unwanted infections.
Avoid Makeup and Sunscreen: On the day of the surgery, avoid applying makeup or sunscreen. Upon arriving to the clinic, we will also ask you to wash your face one more time!
Comfort and Practical Considerations
Wear Comfortable Clothing: Choose clothing that is easy to remove and put on, such as a button-up shirt or zip-up jacket, for convenience when changing into surgical attire.
Smoking and Alcohol: Refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol at least 1-2 days before your surgery, and 1 month after the surgery! Both can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of complications.
Final Checks
Physical Condition: Notify the surgical team of any changes in your physical condition before the surgery date.
Payment: Ensure the surgery fee is paid in full before the procedure begins. Verify potential payment limits with your bank to avoid any delays.
Identification: Please bring your passport for identification and any other necessary document preparations.
By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your surgery goes as smoothly as possible and support a faster and more effective recovery. If you have any questions or need further clarification, don’t hesitate to reach out to your medical team.
